Moringa plant is beginning to gain more popularity as a new “superfood” for its highly nutritious profile and powerful anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and tissue-protective properties among many other health benefits.
Moringa oleifera, also known as horseradish tree, ben tree, or drumstick tree, is a small tree from India, Pakistan, and Nepal that has been used for generations in Eastern countries to treat and prevent diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, anaemia, arthritis, liver disease, and respiratory, skin, and digestive disorders.
Moringa leaves are a rich source of many nutrients like Vitamin A, Vitamin B, Vitamin C, Vitamin D and Vitamin E. In fact, they have many more vitamins than the richest sources such as carrots, oranges and milk. They can be cooked and eaten in many ways. They can be consumed as juice, vegetable, oil, etc. The benefits of consuming moringa include:
1. Moringa helps control blood sugar
Eating a tablespoon of lightly toasted Moringa leaves early in the morning is a traditional herbal remedy for hyperglycaemia. Recent laboratory studies using leaf powder on diabetic animals show that this is indeed helpful in regulating blood sugar. The beneficial effect is partially attributed to the fiber content, but the complex acids found in the plant could be playing an even more important role. The same effects are achieved with consumption of moringa juice, or any other moringa-based product.
2. Moringa reduces inflammation
Moringa leaves contain iron, anti-inflammatory, and antiseptic properties. This helps cure minor injuries like bruises, cuts and burns. It also helps in quick healing of injuries.
3. Moringa balances cholesterol levels
Moringa leaves contain fat burning and slimming properties that nourish and energize your body. These leaves are useful to naturally stop junk food cravings and to boost energy for a healthy and active lifestyle. Note that in excessive amounts moringa can have laxative effects, therefore no more than ½ to 1 teaspoon of moringa powder should be used per day.
